Depth in the gallery

Generate local depth for eligible photos on iOS and choose between the original and a copy.

Needs validationReviewed on October 16, 2026

Prerequisites

  • iOS with the native module installed
  • Photos read and write permissions granted
  • Eligible JPEG/HEIC without existing depth; RAW is not accepted

Generate depth on your deviceBeta

Open a photo, tap Information and expand Blur under Create and edit. Depth generation uses a model included in the app and runs locally, without a first-use download or sending the photo to a server. Android does not offer this action.

This feature estimates relative depth after capture and is separate from the camera's Portrait mode. It does not measure physical distances. Eligible Live Photos keep their video in the edit or copy.

Choose original or copy

  • Applying depth to the original keeps the library item and creates a reversible edit with a private backup. The Portrait adjustment is accessed through Edit in Photos.
  • Creating a copy saves a new original with depth and preserves the source photo. The copy receives compatible date, location, favorite, visibility, rating and album information.
  • The copy allows the Portrait toggle in the viewer in cases already tested. Broader compatibility with Photos controls remains experimental and depends on the file, device and iOS.
  • HEIF with Photographic Styles requires a copy when EXIF orientation is not 1 or when it is a Live Photo; the interface prevents editing the original in these cases.

Reversal and recovery

Reverting depth depends on the private backup and an edit recognized as belonging to Komorebi. Later edits in another app may block reversal to preserve that change.

Photos edited by the previous version may offer Save copy for Portrait from the backup. Uninstalling the app removes private backups; the source photo preserved by creating a copy remains in the library.
